ACR FAQ
- How do I bring up Help?
- Press F12 at any time.
- How do I bring up the controls window?
- Press F1 while in the simulator.
- The cars are very sensitive to steering input- how can I make it easier to drive?
- Until you get used to the more realistic car control, you can turn down steering sensitivity in the controls UI. While running the simulator, you can press F1, then click Controls (lower left), and adjust controls while still in the simulation. This will allow you to quickly & easily set the controls to your liking.
- What is "Progression"
- Progression is ACR's single player mode. Work through all Progression levels to get a feel for the different cars and conditions simulated by ACR. Next, race with friends online.
- Why simulate the ground with bicubic surfaces?
- A continuous, smooth surface is more like a real road. A polygon surface has discontinuities- imagine driving on a road made up of small flat plates joined together. Large changes in elevation/banking will be bumpy, causing the tires to bounce, reducing traction, and making it harder to drive at high speed. ACR has been tested on a banked oval at a simulated 1000MPH! As real tracks are not perfectly smooth, ACR uses displacement maps to make the surface slightly rough while still being continuous. The edges of the curbing are sharply discontinuous, creating a realistic bump when hit.
- 300ms ping with no lag- how is that possible?
- The custom, energy accurate ACR physics engine was designed from the beginning to be networked. All network IO goes through a custom UDP protocol which is very bandwidth efficient and adapts to real-time network conditions. Full server synchronized simulations run on all clients, allowing realistic and accurate car-to-car collisions while hiding lag. Cars won't jump around or jitter- the simulation looks local with pings as high as 300ms and beyond.
- Where did the engine sounds come from?
- My 2002 Z06 LS1 V8 Corvette engine (recorded from exhaust).
- What did you use to model the curved surfaces for the tracks?
- 3D Studio Max and a custom exporter.
