Photon can process Sony A7S Mp4 files into ProRes LT files at 192 FPS on a 12-Core 2010 MacPro from a 4TB hard drive to an SSD:

Installation

  1. Download and unzip Photon and move to your desired location, e.g. the Windows Desktop
  2. If you will be doing lots of conversions, creating a shortcut on the Windows Taskbar is helpful
  3. Download FFMPEG for Windows. Any recent version should work. 32 and 64-bit versions are available here (a static build is fine): http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/
  4. Extract ffmpeg.exe from the download, create a new directory: C:\Program Files\ffmpeg , then copy ffmpeg.exe to C:\Program Files\ffmpeg\ffmpeg.exe
  5. If 422 10-bit H.264 output is desired, download or build ffmpeg for 10-bit support

    2. Install the 10-bit ffmpeg version here as ffmpegH.exe: C:\Program Files\ffmpeg\ffmpegH.exe

Note

If File / Abort Current Jobs is selected, e.g. when testing various options for performance, make sure Overwrite Output if Exists is checked for subsequent file processing.

Example Usage

Converting Sony A7S Mp4 Files for Use with Resolve 11

  1. Set File / Output Directory
  2. Set Input / MP4 (will show as checked)
  3. Set Video / Copy
  4. Set Resolution / Same as Input
  5. Set Audio to Copy
  6. Set Output to MOV
  7. Set Max Jobs to 1 (can try more jobs ff using an SSD for the target: Max Jobs can be changed during processing)
  8. Drag and drop files or directory into Photon to start. More files can be added during processing if desired

Converting Sony FS700 MTS Files for Use with Resolve 11

  1. Set File / Output Directory
  2. Set Input / MTS (will show as checked)
  3. Set Video / Copy
  4. Set Resolution / Same as Input
  5. Set Audio to 16-bit PCM
  6. Set Output to MOV
  7. Set Max Jobs to 1 (can try more jobs if using an SSD for the target: Max Jobs can be changed during processing)
  8. Drag and drop files or directory into Photon to start. More files can be added during processing if desired

Transcoding Samsung NX1 4K H.265 to ProRes 4K and 1080p

  1. Set File / Output Directory
  2. Set Input / MP4 (will show as checked)
  3. Set Video to your choice of ProRes
  4. Set Options / ProRes Mode 1
  5. Set Resolution / Same as Input
  6. Set Audio to 16-bit PCM
  7. Set Output to MOV
  8. Set Max Jobs to 4 to start (Max Jobs can be changed during processing)
  9. Drag and drop files or directory into Photon to start. More files can be added during processing if desired
  10. Photon can process these 4 NX1 H.265 video files at 21fps (when all 4 files being processed at once) in 3m34s on a 2010 12-Core MacPro running Win7.
  11. When resolution is set to 1920×1080, Photon can process the above NX1 files at 46fps on the same hardware.

Transcoding GH4 4K to 1080p ProRes

  1. Set File / Output Directory
  2. Set Input / MP4 (will show as checked)
  3. Set Video to your choice of ProRes
  4. Set Options / ProRes Mode 1 : you can also try ProRes Mode 2 and select more Max Jobs to optimize performance
  5. Set Resolution / 1920×1080: a very high quality Lanczos scaler will be used, converting 420 8-bit to 444 ~10-bit effective luma
  6. Set Audio to 16-bit PCM
  7. Set Output to MOV
  8. Set Max Jobs to 4 (Max Jobs can be changed during processing)
  9. Drag and drop files or directory into Photon to start. More files can be added during processing if desired

ProRes Mode 1 & 2

ProRes Mode 1 runs faster with less jobs (e.g. 1-4 jobs), and ProRes Mode 2 can run faster with more jobs (e.g. 5-12 jobs). ProRes Mode 1 and 2 provide slightly different color processing: footage should be processed using one or the other, else may require more work in post to match. ProRes Mode 2 also provides the ProRes QScale option.

ProRes QScale

The ProRes QScale (Quality Scale) option is available when using ProRes Mode 2. QScale of 1 is the highest quality, raising the bitrate of the current ProRes level, taking more time to process. The higher QScale settings run faster and provide lower bitrates.
